Strike at Tata's Port Talbot steel plant likely coming in short term
As part of a long-term plan to decarbonize and modernize its steel mills, Tata Steel plans to commission an electric arc furnace with an annual production of 3 million tons in Port Talbot in 2027 to replace Port Talbot's blast furnace and converter. This could result in the loss of approximately 3,000 jobs.

The Union representing workers at Tata Steel's Port Talbot and Llanwern steel plants has voted to go on strike, with the United Workers Union set to announce a strike date soon. The Union has proposed the alternative of building a new electric arc furnace while at least one blast furnace remains operational, but Tata Steel has rejected this proposal.
