Mining workers in Peru begin a nationwide strike this week
Union labor leaders said on Wednesday that union workers began an indefinite national strike on Wednesday in protest at the government's proposed reform plan involving labor rights and interests in Peru. Peru is the second largest producer of copper in the world. Ricardo Juarez, the director of Peru National Mining, Metallurgy and Steel Association (FNTMMSP), said the 56 domestic mining union workers participated in the strike action, including the country's largest copper mining workers union. Juarez said the strike may limit several large copper productions, such as BHP Billiton and Glencore's Antamina mine, free port Mike Mo Cerro Verde Lunqi mine, Minmetals's Las Bambas mine and Southern Copper's Cuajone and Toquepala mine.
